Czapek & Cie presents its best-selling Antarctique timepiece in a gold case for the first time.
The Mountain from which the new Antarctique ‘Mount Erebus’ takes its name is the southernmost active volcano on Earth. A remarkable feature of this volcano is the presence in its lava of gold, which is projected into the atmosphere at an estimated rate of 80 grams per day, dissolved in the escaping volcanic gases and therefore impossible to harvest.
The origins of Czapek’s Antarctique line are present in ‘Mount Erebus’ thanks to the lamé dial. Created in collaboration with Metalem, Czapek’s long-time manufacturing partner, it is crafted using a comb that creates an effect like a textured satin finish. Complementing the yellow gold ‘Mount Erebus’ case, the dial offered in Deep Blue is made with a CVD (chemical vapour deposit) technique.
The SXH5.01 automatic caliber is entirely conceived in-house by Czapek and made with the help directed by Czapek in the We Collect Rare People spirit. The microrotor, placed off-center allows a plunging view into its exceptional architecture. A free-sprung balance wheel with variable inertia provided by four gold adjustable weights enables the highest level of precision tuning. The gear train is held in place by a series of seven handsome skeletonized bridges. Their shape is inspired on one side by XIX century pocket watches, and by the Czapek Faubourg de Cracovie chronograph’s rotor. The movement has superlative finishing on the bridges that merges ‘haute horlogerie’ angling techniques with state-ot-the-art laser engravings.
